Project Overview

This project involved the design and construction of a contemporary rear addition to a hillside residence in McLean, Virginia. The homeowners sought to expand their living space while embracing a clean, modern architectural style that would integrate seamlessly with the existing home and surrounding landscape.

The primary challenge was structural integration. Because the residence is located on a sloped site, the addition required careful coordination of foundation systems, load paths, and lateral stability. The design also incorporated a dramatic cantilevered upper level with expansive glazing, requiring a structural solution capable of supporting large openings while maintaining long-term performance.

Our approach focused on engineering precision and visual clarity. A reinforced structural system was developed to support extended roof overhangs, large window walls, and elevated framing conditions while remaining practical to construct. Foundation and framing details were carefully engineered to address the hillside environment, maximize durability, and preserve the architectural vision.
