Thinking About Removing a Wall? Stop and Read This First.
If you’re planning a kitchen remodel or an open-concept layout, one of the first questions you’ll ask is: “Can I take this wall out?”
Before you start swinging hammers, it’s critical to know whether the wall is load-bearing — meaning it supports the structure of your home — or just a partition wall. Mistakenly removing a load-bearing wall can lead to costly structural damage and unsafe living conditions.
As licensed structural engineers serving Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, and the broader DMV area, we get this question all the time. Here’s what every homeowner needs to know.
What Is a Load-Bearing Wall?
A load-bearing wall is a wall that carries vertical loads from above — like floors, the roof, or even other walls — down to the foundation. Removing or altering it requires engineering, permits, and proper support design.
By contrast, non-load-bearing walls simply divide rooms and can often be removed with minimal risk.
5 Ways to Tell If a Wall Might Be Load-Bearing
1. It Runs Perpendicular to the Floor Joists
- If the wall runs across (not parallel to) the joists above, it may be holding them up.
- But don’t rely on this rule alone — exceptions exist.
2. It’s Located Near the Center of the House
- Load-bearing walls are often found near the middle of the home, where main structural beams or girders are located.
3. It’s Directly Above a Beam or Another Wall
- If there’s a wall or beam directly below it in the basement or crawlspace, it’s likely carrying loads from above.
4. It’s Part of the Original Construction
- Older homes tend to have clear structural layouts, while remodeled homes may have more complexity — especially if past changes weren’t properly permitted.
5. It’s Under the Roof Ridge or Trusses
- Walls under the highest point of the roof (ridge line) may help carry the roof load.
Why You Shouldn’t Guess
Even if you think a wall isn’t load-bearing, there’s only one safe way to be sure: Have it evaluated by a structural engineer.
We’ve seen DIY removals go wrong:
- Sagging ceilings
- Cracked drywall
- Bouncy floors
- Permitting problems when selling the home
Fixing these after the fact often costs more than doing it right the first time.
